July 3, 2004 Dear Friends,
The weekend of June 26, 27th I had the opportunity of playing 2 concerts
with my German friends and band Olli, Katrin, Alex and Eckard. The setting
for
this musicianary outreach was largest secular music festival in Europe held
every year just outside of Vienna. As our van "inched" through the crowds
towards our stage, weeping intercession welled up in our hearts over all the
worldly
brokenness and degradation all around us.
The day of our concert a friend of mine got a prayer picture of our band
literally carrying the Ark of the Covenant, the very Presence of God,
through the masses into this festival as we traveled the long distance to
our stage. There in the midst of lewdness, drunkenness, lust, and every
sight
and smell imaginable, the Lord was there still saying, "Come to me."
Indeed, we did feel God's Presence all about us as we sang and I am thankful
to say, others did too. Even during our soundcheck, a drunk man had to leave
his park bench several meters away when we began to worship and come as
close to the "source" of the sound as possible. For him, it was as though
gravity
was pulling him from the back of the field to the very front of our stage
where
he kept saying over and over again, "You're Holy" while blowing kisses into
the air like a little child.
In a sea of MTV-esque hype and artist personalities and so much more, our
small band of no-names were given one of the very best time slots and one of
the very best stages of the entire weekend to declare His Name to the
nations.
We saw the Lord touch political party leaders, stage hands, sound guys,
believers and nonbelievers, young and old alike. God was even using this
Christian stage to bridge Catholic and Protestant believers...as they were
astounded
to find themselves in the same field, worshiping the same Jesus in spirit
and
truth. Also, God used this weekend to open a door for future
festivals/outreaches to minister in this place.
Though I began to lose my voice about 2 songs into our long set, it was
another moment of seeing God's strength in my weakness, and it became the
catalyst for much audience participation as we transitioned from our
'performance'
set into praise and worship. It was an amazing time and without question, we
give God all the glory.
